Brainspotting
The Revolutionary New Therapy for Rapid and Effective Change
Dr. David Grand

introduction
What is brainspotting?
The central idea behind brainspotting states “where you look affects how you feel”. Brainspotting founded by Dr. David Grand is a treatment that allows the brain to process traumatic experiences/memories, negative emotions, anxiety and many other presenting problems using body sensation and eye position. The human survival response fight flight or freeze, is initiated from deep within the primitive part of the brain called the amygdala in the survival-based limbic system.
This part of the brain is completely unconscious. Once the amygdala has experienced a traumatic event and shoots out the fight flight and freeze response into the nervous system and body, the event becomes engrained in the subconscious brain in order to protect us. This primitive survival mechanism is very good at doing its job, warning us of possible exposure to threats to our survival. Brainspotting is able to access this part of the brain, process and release these automatic responses using eye-position and body sensation.

How does it help?
Brainspotting bypasses the frontal cortex, or thinking mind, by reaching into the deep survival limbic system to process the traumatic experiences & negative emotional states and so forth. Talk-therapy although helpful does not permit the individual to drop into the physical and unconscious experience of the trauma or issue in the same way or intensity as Brainspotting.
As a society we do not release or metabolize the intense traumatic energy that physically courses through us following a traumatic event. Brainspotting facilitates the processing and resolution of these ‘stuck’ responses/energies allowing the individual to heal and move forward.
Brainspotting can help with physical/emotional/sexual abuse, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), veteran/war trauma, break ups, anxiety/panic, depression, sports injuries, performance anxiety, artistic blockages and many others.
