Teenagers
The rapport I build with teenagers is based on receptive understanding and an empathic alliance.

TENNAGERS
Individuality & Indepenence
Preteens and teenagers often struggle with emotions and communication as they are beginning to form an identity separate from their parents and/or caretakers. Preteens and teenagers go through a process of individuation and autonomous drive; they desire independence.
The preteen/teenage body and brain goes through a number of intense physical, hormonal, and emotional changes. Teenagers during this time have the challenge of navigating life, social worlds, and academics while all these brain and body changes are taking place. The middle ground between childhood and adulthood is where identity and self-esteem are greatly impacted.
Preteens and teenagers can develop serious and sometimes life threatening psychological symptoms and behaviors including anxiety, depression, engaging in self-harm, and suicidal thoughts or actions. If a preteen or teenager is facing these feelings it is important to seek professional support.
Therapy can be a vital tool because it is a safe and neutral place for preteens and teenagers to explore and discuss this adjustment. I aim to cultivate this environment by remaining relatable and accessible as an ally.
“Your value as a person is not predicated on someones else’s ability to discern your worth. “

APPROACH
Understanding & Allaince
Teenagers face unique struggles with social and peer pressures, changing roles, identity development, self-esteem, and academic performance. Combined with a neurological predisposition for impulsive thoughts, behaviors and decisions, these struggles often call for professional therapeutic support.
I engage in authentic and empathically concentrated talk therapy, as well as art and play therapy in a collaborative fashion so teenagers can feel heard and validated. Body-based trauma therapies such as Brainspotting and Somatic Experiencing can also supplement treatment for teenagers. My approach is to truly understand their position and align affably providing a haven for expression, individuality, and acknowledgment.
